Ganguly Talks About Coaching Ambitions and Gautam Gambhir’s Early Days as Head Coach
Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has sparked fresh discussion in Indian cricket circles after publicly expressing his interest in coaching the national team. During a recent interview, Ganguly said,
“I would love to coach the Indian team. It’s a great job. The players are so talented.”
His remarks come shortly after Gautam Gambhir began his stint as India’s new head coach, following the end of Rahul Dravid’s tenure in 2024.
Gautam Gambhir’s Coaching Start: A Mixed Bag
Appointed after guiding Kolkata Knight Riders to their third IPL title, Gautam Gambhir took over as India’s head coach in mid-2024. His first few months have been a mixed affair, with notable challenges including:
- A series loss in Sri Lanka
- An ODI defeat against New Zealand
- A 3-0 whitewash in Tests against South Africa
Despite these setbacks, cricket pundits and former players, including Ganguly, have urged fans and critics to show patience.
Ganguly on Gambhir: “Let Him Be”
Sourav Ganguly defended Gambhir’s initial performances and leadership style, saying that it’s too early to make judgments. He said:
“Let him be. Gautam has always been straightforward with the media. That’s his personality. Give him some time.”
The former BCCI President also stated that Gambhir brings value with his winning mindset and experience in handling high-pressure situations — especially after his IPL success.
“If He Applies, He’ll Be a Good Candidate” – Ganguly on Gambhir’s Role
While Ganguly clearly supports Gambhir’s appointment, he also hinted at his own aspirations. When asked if he would consider the coaching role again, he responded:
“I would love to. If the opportunity comes, it’s a great job.”
He further commented on India’s growing coaching talent pool, emphasizing that the country has many capable candidates who can take Indian cricket forward.
